Bomber Command Clasp (2013)
The Bomber Command Clasp is awarded to aircrew of Bomber Command who served on a Bomber Command operational unit and flew at least one operational sortie between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945. It is worn on the ribbon of the 1939–1945 Star and follows the design principles of the Battle of Britain Clasp.
The Bomber Command Clasp, introduced in 2013, provides long‑overdue recognition to the aircrew who served with RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War. Worn on the ribbon of the 1939–1945 Star, the clasp honours those who flew at least one operational sortie as part of the Command’s campaign.
For decades, veterans received no specific medal acknowledging their service, largely due to post‑war controversy surrounding the strategic bombing campaign. The UK Government stated that the clasp was introduced to address a long‑standing lack of recognition for Bomber Command aircrew, despite their exceptionally high casualty rate and central role in the air war. This decision followed the Holmes Review into medallic recognition.
It stands today as a symbol of national gratitude — a simple but powerful tribute to the men who carried out one of the war’s most demanding and dangerous duties.
